Hagman D.C. Bound

(1-14-2008)
Washington D.C. - Looks as if the Capitals werent happy enough with their recently forward problems. Addressing earlier in the year of Ryan Kesler just hasent been enough for Caps GM Sviland to go out and get more. "We need more scoring, period. We are looking at a very young team that has had a few breakouters this year. We know we are only going to go up next year and we want to make a statement, that this IS OUR YEAR to start the damange to upper clubs." Sviland Said. On sunday early afternoon, Washington pulled the trigger. Washington aquired vetran third liner Niklas Hagman, who is a UFA after the season, from the Boston Bruins for disgruntled forward Marc-Antoine Pouliot and a third round choice.

"We loved this kid. We might have been too high on him for all these years but we just waited and waited and he just never produced. He was given more then his fair share of chances and he failed to take initiative. Hes got potential but we just lost faith, with that I think he lost faith in our organization too." Sviland said after news conference.

Washington expects back a few players who would definitely boost their morale around the lockerroom. Jason Williams, who has been out since late November to early December is due back within the next 3-6 weeks. "Jason helped us stay in the hunt for a while. He was flying out there and was posting career numbers to no limit. Hes got the tools and hopefully he can come back, find that game and continue. Next year we very well might see the best Jason Williams possible." Also note, the team has been without star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for over the course of the last few weeks as well. "He'll be skating soon and hopefully he will get back into the flow in time for crunch time. Kid has potential and emense skill, hopefully this injury will rattle his cage a little and wake him up." Last year, Fleury posteed superb numbers that made him one of the best, if not the best goalie second half of the season.

As it was said earlier, with Washington making stronger signs of aging/maturing young players, adding players like offensively dynamic Michael Frolik, the ever so shifty playmaking T.J. Hensick and maybe a suprise one or two, they might very well challenge the top 10 next season.

By the way, with the play of Casey Borer, it looks as if Washington might have one of the best and most consistant top 7 defensemen in the league. (Look at officepools, numbers done lie!)
