Washington Capitals hope

Washington Post (1/28/07)

General manager Ken Sviland has had a lot of talk about where this team is going to be next year at this time, and heres some outlook at what is to come next year:

Line up Potential if all talk goes accordingly..

Sundin - Williams - Brown
M. Richards - Hudler - Filppula
Eriksson - Bulis - Samuelsson
Grigorenko - Pushkarev - Bergenheim

Now, Washington is looking to deal a few players to make room for others. Pouliot is going to be looking at a good training camp, if he does, or if he gets traded, he should finally be a rookie next year on some team on the top 3 lines and hopefully scoring more then just a handful of points. "We got high hopes for MAP. We think the kid is more then ready but he is just stuck in a bad situation. A deep club. We feel that if he is given the time, he will produce and in a rookie year in the New NHL, we feel like 30-40 pts in 70+ games isnt far from reality. That would be one hell of a start for us. We lack a emerging forward, or a budding top 6 guy, we think hes ready for prime time." Said GM Sviland.

On the last line, he commented on saying, "Grigorenko by all reports is comming over finally next year. He wants to be a NHLer and stated it more this year. He feels hes ready and he knows this is the year, if not, we will basically end all hope in him coming over. We arent growing inpatient but were getting there. Pushkaev gelled good with Dusty, we feel he could produce some good numbers next year or be given a good shot on another team sooner or later. The kid has talent, its a given, but its a matter of being in the right situation. Bergie is out this year in Europe. He looked very good by all reports ive been given by my scouting staff and it looks like he wants to come back, if he does we hope that he leaves off where he started. We see him as good as a player like Jason Blake, hopefully he wont disappoint."

Washington also has hopes for a few others to suprise. Voloshenko could very well emerge out of the gates and be given a shot on the main club if his team decides to part with players they really dont need, its do-able. Michael Frolik is having a great year and the organization he is involved with loves to bring in there kids young. Hes as skilled as anyone else and i think it could be his time next year to help a horrible franchise in dire need to help. Alex Picard could become a emerging enforcer. He doesnt have the scoring game we wanted out of him so that might be a shot, but replacing a guy like Tyson Nash who we are growing old with is a high potential possability.

Michail Grabovski is a impressive package of skillset and speed. "We are escatic when we signed him. Hes a very quick and very skilled player. He will be in the NHL in the next 365 daysw to stay, we arent worried. He will become a socrer and a playmaker, and his potential is just as high as any other boomer in the organization. The sky is the limit"

On defense, Sviland said this. "We loved seeing what 3rd rounder Letang did for us in the early gates. Being that he will be in the great offensive situation playing with crosby and malkin, we feel like this kid is going to be a hell of a top 3 defensemen and a budding PP QB. With guys like Kronwall, a PP QB in the making, Liles who is one of the best PP QBs in the league, Seabrook, another good PP QB and a defensive stellar guy in Hamhuis, we feel like we got the core of a amazing top 6, maybe in 2 years the best top 6 defenemen in the league or top 2. We also feel that when healthy, they could be top 10 best 6 in the league right now, minus Letang ofcourse. We love babchuks play lately, but we also love Beauchemins solid play as well. Its going to be hard but we know we need to deal one of these two kids, Babchuk or Beauchemin, for a piece of the puzzle, and we hate to do it, we really do. We also wish we still has Jiri Fischer around, this would make this team even stronger at defense. "

As for goaltending, Washington might suprise a few this summer by not waiting for Howard to come in yet, but aquire a goaltender in the early stages of next years season.

Washington thinks they still got a lot of promise in the farm, a lot of potetial...

More to come soon!
